Creativity a Symptom of Mental Illness?

New study reveals a dramatic flare for the arts may just be a repercussion of one's own craziness.

Art lovers have long known that Van Gogh — who chopped off his ear — suffered from mental illness. Fans of Virginia Woolf know that the author — who killed herself — was frequently depressed. A new study from Sweden's Karolinska Institute suggests that an artist's creativity may be linked to his or her mental illness
The brightest and most creative minds present and past — many responsible for art, literature, and music — are treated more frequently for mental illness when compared to the general population.
By studying 1.2 million patients, including both in-hospital and outpatient care, researchers found that artists and scientists — as well as their relatives in creative professions — were members of families that showed a greater history of bipolar disease, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, autism, drug and alcohol abuse, ADHD, anorexia, and suicide.
Results also confirmed that bipolar disease was more common in creative professional populations such as authors, dancers, and photographers. Writers had an even more specific correlation with psychiatric diseases than general creative people and were twice as likely to commit suicide.
Evidence of the link between mental illness and creative genius raises the possibility for new mental health treatments in the future.  "If one takes the view that certain phenomena associated with the patient's illness are beneficial, it opens the way for a new approach to treatment," says Simon Kyaga, consultant in psychiatry and doctoral student at the Karolinska Institute's department of medical epidemiology and biostatistics.

Hmmmnnnn...
what do i say?
