Our meeting on Saturday 25th of May 2019 hit so close to our favourite day of the year; Children's Day...Yaay!!!
Some of our members already had an early celebration to commemorate the day in their schools, others had very colorful plans in the coming week along the lines of pageantry, free gift race at Shoprite and free ice cream.
It is soo great to be a child at this time.
First we reminisced on children's day of my generation which involved marching in the hot sun at stadiums and parades that made us run temperature with stress. At least, we had very hot spicy jollof rice and chilled bottle of Coca-Cola for our troubles.
Then, we reminisced on Children's Day of last year and the themes which included caring for the underprivileged children as part of Sustainable Goals. We remembered our visit to the IDP camp in Abuja and hoped to plan another donation to the camp soon.
We reviewed our own story series The Chronicles of William Greene Estate published in our Newsletter which is printed twice a year. (Find the story in our next post)
While some children found it too hard to relate with Josiah noting that he allowed himself to get used and bullied, two others recognized his character; one in her classmate, another in himself. Wao! who would have thought?
Well, We all agreed that it made for an interesting read as we explored the writing technique called Suspense as used in the story.
For the younger class, The meeting was fun all the way as usual. We played a fun game called "concentration" and Jonathan emerged as the winner with Wueseter as first runner-up.
We proceeded to read a short story from our newsletter on lying and dishonesty. Lying is definitely not a way to build integrity.
The children had lots of random questions to ask Aunty Didi like "how many people are in Uganda?" Do you know?
We also had our writing class with Aunty Noela where the kids had the opportunity to share what they wrote on in their previous assignment. We are excited about their work coming up in the next edition of the newsletter.
We ate our snacks and played a little before going home.
It was truly an amazing time out like no other.
Happy Children's Day to all the children in the world, in Nigeria and in Abuja!
Join us and make these unforgettable memories together!!
