Nigerian Billionaire Folorunsho Alakija replaces Oprah Winfrey as the World’s Richest Black Woman
Ever since her mention in the recent Forbes Africafeature as one of the richest women in Africa, Nigerian billionaire oil tycoon, Fashion designer and philanthropist, Folorunsho Alakijahas captured the attention of many as someone to watch out for. Now, another online publication, Ventures Africa has ranked her as the World’s Richest Black Woman. According to the report, she has ousted Oprah Winfrey from the position.
Ventures Africa claims that contrary to the Forbes Magazine ranking which pegs her net worth at only $600 million, Alakija is actually worth at least $3.3 billion. She earned most of her wealth from the oil and gas sector.
Alakija, 61, started out her professional career in the mid 70s as a secretary at the now defunct International Merchant Bank of Nigeria, one of the country’s earliest investment banks. In the early 80s, she quit her job and went on to study Fashion design in England, returning to Nigeria shortly afterwards to start Supreme Stitches, a premium Nigerian fashion label which catered exclusively to upscale clientele.
How to Write the Perfect Resume
We write a lot about resumes — what to do, what not to do — so now we're introducing a guide to crafting a curriculum vitae that will get you into the interview room. However, these rules are general advice we compiled from career experts. Everyone should tailor their own resume depending on the industry they're in and the position they're applying for.
Tailor your resume to the specific position you're applying for
elizabethdaniellephotos / statigr.amYou're basically selling yourself on that piece of paper, so mold the information to reflect what your potential employer is looking for in an ideal job candidate. This is different depending on your industry.
Miriam Salpeter advises in U.S.News & World Report that candidates should study the company's web site and "look for repeated words and phrases, taglines, and hints about their philosophical approaches."
Then, "mirror some of their language and values in your resume."
Put your name and contact info at the top.

The 5 Dirtiest Secrets of Your Kitchen
Germs Are Lurking in Unlikely Places
People cross-contaminate all the time in the kitchen and never realize it. If they're preparing chicken and reach into the drawer for a fork or knife, they've gotten chicken germs on the drawer's handle and on the utensils inside the drawer.— Jo Dickerson, author of the blog "Poop on a Hot Tin Slide"
Even a seemingly spotless
kitchen might be teeming with bacteria and germs, often in places you
would never even imagine them to be. These microbes spread easily,
making their way from cutting boards, drawer knobs and countertops to
your eating utensils, food and ultimately your digestive system, where
they can make you sick.
Microbes cannot be seen with the naked eye,
of course, so you might sometimes wonder if you have actually
disinfected your kitchen or merely spread the germs around. There's no
need to fret: Experts say that with a little awareness and preparation,
you can keep your kitchen and its contents bacteria-free.
The Refrigerator Door Handle
The microbes that live
on chicken, pork and beef can almost always be found on a refrigerator
door handle, according to Dr. Eric E. Schadt, chairman of the department
of genetics and genomics sciences at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and
chief scientific officer of Pacific Biosciences.
Germ blogger Jo Dickerson agrees, saying cross-contamination is the biggest problem in the kitchen.
Dickerson, who — in the blog "Poop
on a Hot Tin Slide" — writes about her germ-focused Expression of
obsessive compulsive disorder "and various other nasty phobias," said,
"People probably cross-contaminate all the time in the kitchen and never
realize it."
"For example," she says, "if
they're preparing chicken and reach into the drawer for a fork or knife,
they've gotten chicken germs on the drawer's handle and then on the
utensils inside the drawer too."
Hand washing is the quickest and
simplest way to prevent this contamination, says Dr. Ellen Neuhaus,
director for infectious diseases for the Eastern Connecticut Health
Network in Vernon, Connecticut. The problem, she says, is that many
people do not know how to wash their hands correctly.
"The trick to doing proper hand
hygiene is to use soap and water for 15 seconds and to shut off the
faucet with a paper towel or the elbow," Neuhaus explains. "Shutting it
off with the hands only recontaminates the hands with the very organisms
that were on them when they opened the water faucet."
BEAUTY TIPS I AM LEARNING.
Most people know how to treat their skin, hair and nails. But "knowing"
in the beauty world is often a practice in misinformation or overly
general advice. That is, we may know what to do, but we don't know how
to do it. Or how to do it properly. It's time to finally know what you
"know," with real secrets and actual truths about beauty maintenance.
From skin irritants to mani-pedi prep to getting the most out of your
hair, these are beauty secrets that every woman should know.
SECRET: Your Skin Cleanser Is Making Things Worse (Maybe)
Cleansing can irritate even healthy skin, never mind sensitive or “problem” skin, and many cleansers are guilty. How then should you best cleanse without further irritation? The solution, regardless of skin type, is to look for a gentle cleanser that dissolves dirt and excess oil without leaving the skin feeling tight or tingly — nothing with detergents, alcohols, fragrances, irritants or ingredients that block pores. Think that means going natural? No. Among the list of irritants are lemon, mint, cinnamon and essential oils.Stop Avoiding Exfoliation; Start Glowing
How do some
women achieve that enviable perfect, “glowing” skin? Genetics plays a
part, to be sure. But even good genes need help. It comes in the form of
exfoliation. Exfoliating your skin allows skin-care serums and creams
to perform better through improved penetration. Brightened skin – that
“glow” – is the immediate benefit. Word to the wise: Those with active
acne and/or rosacea should only exfoliate with salicylic acid, pending
approval from their dermatologist.
Want Sweet Skin? Try a Sweet Scrub.
Regular
facials are essential to maintaining healthy skin – and at-home facials
can work just as well as pricey spa treatments. There a number of ways
to get pro treatment at home, but look first to sugar, one of nature’s
great skin-sloughing agents. Applying a sugar scrub in gentle circular
motions, followed by a lukewarm wash and pat-dry, can do wonders for
your skin. Follow with a light steam by boiling a pot water, removing it
from the stove and standing over it for a few minutes.
The Body Scrub You Haven't Tried
Faces often
get preferential scrub treatment, while our poor bodies are neglected.
From scuffed-up feet to dry, scaly skin on your legs, elbows and arms,
our bodies can take a beating. Oftentimes, our daily “scrubs” (read:
soap) are the culprit. There’s an easy feel-like-new remedy, though. And
it might be in your kitchen. Mix coconut oil, kosher salt or sugar, and
some minced basil into a paste, and scrub away. Again, steam helps. But
doing this regularly helps even more.
GETTING STARTED.
This one was sooo for me...i had to read and learn n read and learn...
For most of us, it is the start of another week day. The procrastinator in some of us may still cling on the hems of Sunday’s lazy, comfortable sheets but listen, no matter how adept you are at putting off work, you have to do work eventually because that is what you are being paid to do. But a tiny voice in your head says, “but the deadline is still 2 days away!” Listen to this little guy and before you knew it’s Wednesday and you haven’t done a thing.
Yes, there are deadlines for work. But there’s also a deadline for when to start work. The difference is – you get to define it.
The problem?
Most of us do not clearly define our “start work deadline”.
Monday tainz...
Its Monday people...deal with it. Here are 20 ways to help you beat the Monday Blues:
- Procrastinate feeling blue. Is a gloomy cloud forming above your head? Ignore it – you’ll give your attention to it later, not now.
- Wear your best clothes or the cheeriest colour from your wardrobe. You’d be surprise how much your clothes could affect the way you feel about yourself.
- Early start - bad things happen when you are late, the tension level is high, you are in a rush, you don’t have time for breakfast, when you arrive at your office, people are shoving work into your face. It may seem like a punishment to wake up earlier on Monday but trust me, when you have enough time to organize yourself, you’ll feel like you can conquer the day easier.
- Treat yourself in the morning – Sit down and eat. Enjoy your food. Monday is Pancake Breakfast day for me, so I actually look forward to Monday mornings. But eat well - although it’s ok to treat yourself, make sure you eat well. I have a good serving of fruits along with my pancakes. Have enough to drink too - your malaise could be a sign of dehydration.
- Have a list of why you’re having the blues – you might be surprised that there will be things on the list that you can easily work on to make your Mondays better. My problem used to be a completing work from last week (very difficult to gain momentum after a weekend break) which brings us to the next point:
