In 2011 when
President Goodluck Jonathan resumed office, he initiated a 5year development
plan termed the Transformation Agenda,
which has amongst its objectives the need to achieve sustainable economic development
for the Nation. In 2012 as a follow up; he instituted several offices to drive
each tentacle of the Transformation Agenda. The Office of the Senior Special
Assistant to the President on Job creation is one amongst such offices. The
Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on job creation was
given 6 mandates, which are all geared towards stimulating job creation within
the Nation. Some of these mandates are:
ü To
Organize in collaboration with public and private sectors, employment fairs,
exhibitions, symposia etc. to promote entrepreneurship
ü To
develop a model for mass employment of Nigerian youths and interface with all
job creation agencies on policy direction of the government.
ü To
develop a strategy for self-employment and entrepreneurship with emphasis on
agriculture and agro-industries, small and medium enterprises (SME), Mineral
resources etc.
If a sustainable solution is to be reached in
creating jobs to stem the current alarming levels of unemployment, then the
right strategy needs to be implemented to reach out to the persons who are more
affected by unemployment. Recent statistics and research have shown that of all
the population within the country, the youths are most affected by current
unemployment statistics and since there is an increasing youth population, this
challenge is likely to blow up if nothing is done to address the issue.
According to the British council Next generation report, “By 2030, Nigeria will be one of the few countries of the world that
has young workers in plentiful supply. Youths, not oil, will be our greatest
asset.
In fulfillment of the mandate given to the Office of the Special
assistant to the President on Job Creation (OSAPJC) in collaboration with
