That Nigeria’s first female military paratrooper, Capt. Josephine Terkumbur Ancha. Ok...she is in the news again. This time, she has been elevated to the rank of Major by the Nigerian Army.
Bringing out all the superlatives: amazing, brave, gutsy, rugged, daring, courageous, marvellous, superb she deserves them all. Capt. Josephine Ancha is a woman of valour. She is a woman of history. She is the first female paratrooper on the continent of Africa. A boundless specie we must celebrate.
Capt.
Ancha, is promoted
alongside 432 Army officers from the ranks of Lt. Col to Col, Major to
Lt-Col, and Captain to Major by the Army authorities.
Ancha,
who is of the Airborne Wing, Infantry Centre and School, ICS, Jaji,
came to limelight in 2002 when she showed her winning stuff to the
delight of spectators at the Nigerian Army Day Celebration, NADCEL, at
Okpara Square Enugu. At the event she had a splendid hitch-free drop.
In 2012, she dragged the Nigerian Army and Defence Minister before the
National Industrial Court (NIC) where she demanded N1 billion as
general and aggravated damages for unlawful retirement from service.
The award winning paratrooper was said to have been sacked by the Military command on the ground that bottles of alcohol were found on board the aircraft that lifted Nigerian contingents [including her] to Darfur, Sudan.
In the suit, she pressed for an order of court declaring her purported compulsory retirement without trial as ineffective, unlawful, null and void, and that her contract of employment being protracted by statute, can only be terminated in accordance with laid down statutory procedure.

She made history! And today, we celebrate her!
Reading from the 'Nigerian
Pilot', the affected Army officers were promoted from the
Regular Combatant, Direct Regular Commission, Direct Short Service
Commission, and the Executive Commission.
The effective date of their promotion varied
as some would hang their new ranks soon while others would do so next
month.
This good news no doubt. I guess the better news will be when our army will be better equipped to handle the rising insurgency.
Cheers to the boundless Major Josephine Terkumbur Ancha!
