Answering the criticism that the crowd sourced encyclopedia is facing for many years, Wikipedia has this week finally brought out a whole new HTML5-based video player that would allow upload of clips and captions as well with text.
It is being said that the new video player would simplify the act of including videos to the text-based pages of the site, which are tens of millions in number. Contributors would be able to add subtitles in between the videos.
Though the same feature was being awaited since long, it is being believed that editorial dispute may be seen with the new level of usability. The report says that it is unknown how the infamous community of editors for the online encyclopedia would react to the latest feature.
The encyclopedia, as per the findings, has delayed the introduction of this feature so much for the only reason that it was committed to use only open-source technology. Also, it has been found that Wikipedia had promised to host all the content in-house and not with the help of data centers of other companies.
It is thus being said that the online encyclopedia would need to bide its time at least until it get sufficient server capacity for hosting the videos and people support the HTML5 based WebM.
