AS NIGERIA IS DECLARED EBOLA FREE TODAY BY W.H.O...

  Dr. Ameyo Stellah Adadevoh

It was a black 2014 on many fronts for Nigeria my country but not with the EVD, for we shone bright like a diamond. Not because it did not get to us but as you know dear reader, it did. Ebola killed a couple of people in Nigeria. Many also survived. The heroine for me in this saga is Dr. Mrs Stella Adadevoh. It was her who held back the Liberian diplomatic carrier of the dreaded EVD. If it was not for her, that diplomat would have landed himself in Calabar. Yes, that was his destination. So  Dr Mrs Adadevoh kept her patient back from interacting and infecting more Nigerians. Patrick Sawyer the Liberian died and She didn't survive this dreaded disease either.

There were subsequent cases of Ebola transmission from this primary index, Dr Patrick Sawyer. Some were ignorant and most were controlled. The governor of Lagos state Babatunde Fashola was indeed on top of his game and together with the residents of Lagos, ebola today is history.
Although the world health organization will only us ebola free today, the minister of health prof Onyebuchi has since declared Nigeria Ebola free.
As i watch the international media today, Ebola, our common enemy stands out not having an affiliation. Not religious, political, racial or even class. Although Ebola seems to kill more people in the rural areas of other west African countries, it breaks barriers.
The world had seen Nigeria in a better light than ever before. It indeed says 'something good has come out of Nigeria. The unity in this fight should be extended in many other areas of our life that need victory.  Be it security, governance, security, agriculture and the many other areas we need help in Nigeria.
Nigeria's growing and evolving story will remember the times in which we all were. The question we must ask ourselves is What did i do to contribute to Nigeria of today? In your own little corner. Are you waiting to contribute your quota to Nigeria when you are elected? Dr Mrs Stella Adadevoh didnt have to. She wrote her name in the sands of time. She upheld the ethics of her profession and today the world is celebrating Nigeria and not her necessarily. Remove her from this equation and i dare say the story today would have been different.
As Nigeria is declared Ebola free today, i choose to celebrate this special woman who gave her life to save Nigeria. Without gainsaying, women give up a lot of things in their life time. Stella Abigail Ameyo was the grand daughter of renowned Herbert Macauley.
Adadevoh, an experienced consultant physician and endocrinologist was Lead Consultant with First Consultants Medical Centre, Obalende, Lagos, came into the limelight shortly after the dramatic visit of Sawyer, and will be remembered as the first Nigerian confirmed to test positive to the Ebola virus. Good night Dr Adadevoh, you will not only be remembered by your son and husband, but the world will remember you. You died in active selfless service to your motherland.
As Nigeria is declared Ebola free, we remember that day when you literally held down Dr. Patrick Sawyer thereby shielding many more lives.

You are a boundless Nigerian. You remain an example to be followed. May your story teach many the power of influence from our little corners.

Adieu Dr. Stella Ameyo Adadevoh.
