ATE CARNIVAL 2012

BEING THE TEXT OF THE SPEECH PRESENTED BY THE CHAIRMAN, CENTRAL PLANNING COMMITTEE OF THE ATE-U-TIV END OF YEAR CARNIVAL EVENTS, MRS. IRENE MNGUNENGEN AWUNAH-IKYEGH, ON THE 27TH/12/12 AT STEAM MAKURDI.
PROTOCOL

I am humbled to be the one nominated among the many other Tiv Sons and Daughters to present this speech on behalf of the 2012 ATE-U-TIV Carnival events.
This press conference is one of the many other events that the Publicity committee of the Central Planning Committee has planned for this year’s event. The ATE-U-TIV, a social media platform, started upon the realisation of using the power of networking to connect the Tiv world wide to the development of their homeland in 2005. It was known as Global Tiv Networks. Ideas were shared on this forum and there was need to register it as an association so that it can play a significant role in the development of the nation, thence the name Association for Tiv Empowerment (ATE).
After social interactions on line for so many years, members decided to meet and put faces to posts and discussions. So in 2011, An Ate End of Year party (AEoYP) was put together. It is upon this initial attempt that our “Ate Carnival” is built.

Great Nigerian in the Diaspora: 48 Year-Old Attorney, Bunmi Awoniyi named a Superior Court Judge in the US

It’s always wonderful to hear news of Nigerians doing great things in the diaspora. That is why at BellaNaija, we are very proud of Bunmi Awoniyi, a distinguished family and immigration law attorney on her appointment as a Judge in the Sacaramento County Superior Court.

Nigerian Billionaire Folorunsho Alakija replaces Oprah Winfrey as the World’s Richest Black Woman

Ever since her mention in the recent Forbes Africafeature as one of the richest women in Africa, Nigerian billionaire oil tycoon, Fashion designer and philanthropist, Folorunsho Alakijahas captured the attention of many as someone to watch out for. Now, another online publication, Ventures Africa has ranked her as the World’s Richest Black Woman. According to the report, she has ousted Oprah Winfrey from the position.
Ventures Africa claims that contrary to  the Forbes Magazine ranking which pegs her net worth at only $600 million, Alakija is actually worth at least $3.3 billion. She earned most of her wealth from the oil and gas sector.
Alakija, 61, started out her professional career in the mid 70s as a secretary at the now defunct International Merchant Bank of Nigeria, one of the country’s earliest investment banks. In the early 80s, she quit her job and went on to study Fashion design in England, returning to Nigeria shortly afterwards to start Supreme Stitches, a premium Nigerian fashion label which catered exclusively to upscale clientele.

How to Write the Perfect Resume

It takes recruiters an average of "six seconds before they make the initial 'fit or no fit' decision" on candidates based on resumes, according to research conducted by TheLadders. With this kind of competition, you need to have a flawless resume to get through the screening process.

We write a lot about resumes — what to do, what not to do — so now we're introducing a guide to crafting a curriculum vitae that will get you into the interview room. However, these rules are general advice we compiled from career experts. Everyone should tailor their own resume depending on the industry they're in and the position they're applying for.

Tailor your resume to the specific position you're applying for

elizabethdaniellephotos / statigr.amYou're basically selling yourself on that piece of paper, so mold the information to reflect what your potential employer is looking for in an ideal job candidate. This is different depending on your industry.

Miriam Salpeter advises in U.S.News & World Report that candidates should study the company's web site and "look for repeated words and phrases, taglines, and hints about their philosophical approaches."

Then, "mirror some of their language and values in your resume."

Put your name and contact info at the top.

The 5 Dirtiest Secrets of Your Kitchen

Germs Are Lurking in Unlikely Places

People cross-contaminate all the time in the kitchen and never realize it. If they're preparing chicken and reach into the drawer for a fork or knife, they've gotten chicken germs on the drawer's handle and on the utensils inside the drawer.
— Jo Dickerson, author of the blog "Poop on a Hot Tin Slide"
Even a seemingly spotless kitchen might be teeming with bacteria and germs, often in places you would never even imagine them to be. These microbes spread easily, making their way from cutting boards, drawer knobs and countertops to your eating utensils, food and ultimately your digestive system, where they can make you sick.
Microbes cannot be seen with the naked eye, of course, so you might sometimes wonder if you have actually disinfected your kitchen or merely spread the germs around. There's no need to fret: Experts say that with a little awareness and preparation, you can keep your kitchen and its contents bacteria-free.

The Refrigerator Door Handle

The microbes that live on chicken, pork and beef can almost always be found on a refrigerator door handle, according to Dr. Eric E. Schadt, chairman of the department of genetics and genomics sciences at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and chief scientific officer of Pacific Biosciences.
Germ blogger Jo Dickerson agrees, saying cross-contamination is the biggest problem in the kitchen.
Dickerson, who — in the blog "Poop on a Hot Tin Slide" — writes about her germ-focused Expression of obsessive compulsive disorder "and various other nasty phobias," said, "People probably cross-contaminate all the time in the kitchen and never realize it."
"For example," she says, "if they're preparing chicken and reach into the drawer for a fork or knife, they've gotten chicken germs on the drawer's handle and then on the utensils inside the drawer too."
Hand washing is the quickest and simplest way to prevent this contamination, says Dr. Ellen Neuhaus, director for infectious diseases for the Eastern Connecticut Health Network in Vernon, Connecticut. The problem, she says, is that many people do not know how to wash their hands correctly.
"The trick to doing proper hand hygiene is to use soap and water for 15 seconds and to shut off the faucet with a paper towel or the elbow," Neuhaus explains. "Shutting it off with the hands only recontaminates the hands with the very organisms that were on them when they opened the water faucet."

BEAUTY TIPS I AM LEARNING.

Most people know how to treat their skin, hair and nails. But "knowing" in the beauty world is often a practice in misinformation or overly general advice. That is, we may know what to do, but we don't know how to do it. Or how to do it properly. It's time to finally know what you "know," with real secrets and actual truths about beauty maintenance. From skin irritants to mani-pedi prep to getting the most out of your hair, these are beauty secrets that every woman should know.

SECRET: Your Skin Cleanser Is Making Things Worse (Maybe)

Cleansing can irritate even healthy skin, never mind sensitive or “problem” skin, and many cleansers are guilty. How then should you best cleanse without further irritation? The solution, regardless of skin type, is to look for a gentle cleanser that dissolves dirt and excess oil without leaving the skin feeling tight or tingly — nothing with detergents, alcohols, fragrances, irritants or ingredients that block pores. Think that means going natural? No. Among the list of irritants are lemon, mint, cinnamon and essential oils.

Stop Avoiding Exfoliation; Start Glowing

How do some women achieve that enviable perfect, “glowing” skin? Genetics plays a part, to be sure. But even good genes need help. It comes in the form of exfoliation. Exfoliating your skin allows skin-care serums and creams to perform better through improved penetration. Brightened skin – that “glow” – is the immediate benefit. Word to the wise: Those with active acne and/or rosacea should only exfoliate with salicylic acid, pending approval from their dermatologist.

Want Sweet Skin? Try a Sweet Scrub.

Regular facials are essential to maintaining healthy skin – and at-home facials can work just as well as pricey spa treatments. There a number of ways to get pro treatment at home, but look first to sugar, one of nature’s great skin-sloughing agents. Applying a sugar scrub in gentle circular motions, followed by a lukewarm wash and pat-dry, can do wonders for your skin. Follow with a light steam by boiling a pot water, removing it from the stove and standing over it for a few minutes.

The Body Scrub You Haven't Tried

Faces often get preferential scrub treatment, while our poor bodies are neglected. From scuffed-up feet to dry, scaly skin on your legs, elbows and arms, our bodies can take a beating. Oftentimes, our daily “scrubs” (read: soap) are the culprit. There’s an easy feel-like-new remedy, though. And it might be in your kitchen. Mix coconut oil, kosher salt or sugar, and some minced basil into a paste, and scrub away. Again, steam helps. But doing this regularly helps even more.

GETTING STARTED.

Good Monday everyone!
This one was sooo for me...i had to read and learn n read and learn...

For most of us, it is the start of another week day. The procrastinator in some of us may still cling on the hems of Sunday’s lazy, comfortable sheets but listen, no matter how adept you are at putting off work, you have to do work eventually because that is what you are being paid to do. But a tiny voice in your head says, “but the deadline is still 2 days away!” Listen to this little guy and before you knew it’s Wednesday and you haven’t done a thing.
Yes, there are deadlines for work. But there’s also a deadline for when to start work. The difference is – you get to define it.
The problem?
Most of us do not clearly define our “start work deadline”.
Food Clock
Look at the time now. Select a realistic time to begin your work. For example, if you arrived at the office at 8:25am, settle down, turn on your PC and say, “By 8:35am, I am going to begin the introduction section for my report on Purple Running Bananas.” Be specific. If you are particularly bad at keeping promises with yourself, set a timer.

Monday tainz...

send mond...

Its Monday people...deal with it. Here are 20 ways to help you beat the Monday Blues:
  1. Procrastinate feeling blue. Is a gloomy cloud forming above your head? Ignore it – you’ll give your attention to it later, not now.
  2. Wear your best clothes or the cheeriest colour from your wardrobe. You’d be surprise how much your clothes could affect the way you feel about yourself.
  3. Early start - bad things happen when you are late, the tension level is high, you are in a rush, you don’t have time for breakfast, when you arrive at your office, people are shoving work into your face. It may seem like a punishment to wake up earlier on Monday but trust me, when you have enough time to organize yourself, you’ll feel like you can conquer the day easier.
  4. Treat yourself in the morning – Sit down and eat. Enjoy your food. Monday is Pancake Breakfast day for me, so I actually look forward to Monday mornings. But eat well - although it’s ok to treat yourself, make sure you eat well. I have a good serving of fruits along with my pancakes. Have enough to drink too - your malaise could be a sign of dehydration.
  5. Have a list of why you’re having the blues – you might be surprised that there will be things on the list that you can easily work on to make your Mondays better. My problem used to be a completing work from last week (very difficult to gain momentum after a weekend break) which brings us to the next point:

How to Disagree with Your Boss -- Without Losing Your Job

i know how outrightly annoying some bosses can be right...

You're at your weekly staff meeting, and you've just presented your brilliant idea on how to boost productivity and save money. But then your boss shoots down your idea with a vague reason or two. You know you're right and your boss is wrong. So should you remain quiet or stand up for your idea?
Joseph Grenny, co-author of Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High, says that with the right set of skills, you can respectfully disagree with your boss, without damaging the relationship and without risking your job.

Here are some tips:
Speak Up
First, recognize that your opinion counts. "The ability to master crucial conversations is vitally important in the workplace," says Grenny. "Those who have difficulty confronting others negatively impact their organization."
Emily Bennington, co-author of Effective Immediately: How to Fit In, Stand Out, and Move Up at Your First Real Job, agrees that learning how to speak up is vital to success. "As you move up in your career, it's important to understand how to handle difficult conversations," Bennington says. "The sooner we can all learn to solve problems rationally through mature dialogue, the better."
Make Sure Your Concern is 'Boss-Worthy'
While being assertive is important, don't bring every little issue to your boss -- be selective.
"When bosses are bombarded with interpersonal issues between colleagues, they feel like they are babysitting more than leading," Grenny says. "Always try to resolve issues with your colleagues before running to the boss."
Larger concerns that impact your performance or the performance of the organization are boss-worthy, as are times when you need to own up to a mistake.
"Always tell your boss when you've made a mistake that could potentially damage a relationship with a customer or client," says Bennington. "A good boss would rather hear about a problem before it becomes a fire."

Many more career opportunities you should consider.

Bed wetting: Top tips for parents

Help your child learn how to stay dry through the night

African Sleeping Child : Tired girl
Despite bed wetting being very common for young children, some parents still find it embarrassing when their child wets the bed. But it’s important to understand why your child is wetting the bed and help him or her to overcome this problem.

Getting your toddler out of nappies can be tough, but it’s something you have to do in order for your little one to learn how to stay dry through the night. It can be tempting to leave nappies on for longer than necessary, but it’s better to be brave and take them off. During this time, be prepared for bed wetting.

Bed wetting is a natural part of development - approximately one in 12 children in the UK regularly wet the bed. But the condition can be embarrassing for your child, so as a parent the best thing to do is be supportive.

Very few children under the age of three will be dry every night. Most children will naturally grow out of this condition by the age of six. Here are some simple top tips in order to keep your child’s self-esteem on top form during this age of development:

MEN'S HEALTH BOOSTERS!

Surprising health booster 1: Chocolate

Guys, we’ve got good news you – research has revealed that one of the world’s most popular treats is also great for your health! A Swedish study led by Susanna Larsson of the Karolinska Institute has found that eating a standard chocolate bar each week could lower stroke risk for men by 17 per cent.
It is believed that these benefits are derived from the health-boosting flavonoids found in chocolate, which can help reduce clot formation and also lower blood pressure.  Not only this, dark chocolate is also a great source of antioxidants which can help to fight disease and keep wrinkles at bay. While chocolate can be great for your health, it is worth bearing in mind that it should still be consumed in moderation and as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Surprising health booster 2: Marriage

While men may complain about nagging wives, research has found that marriage – and a little bit of nagging – could actually do wonders for your health. Various studies have shown that married men are healthier than those who have never married or have been widowed or divorced. They are also more likely to lead healthier lifestyles, indulging less in alcohol and cigarettes and exercising more often.
In fact, a 10 year study of over 3,000 adults showed that married men had a 46 per cent lower death rate over the course of the study than those who were unmarried. It is thought that these health benefits may be partly due to the social support gained through marriage, but also may stem from the nagging married men receive to go to the doctor when required.

WORLD'S TALLEST WOMAN...

Yao Defen was born on July 15th, 1972 in China. She is 7'8" tall and weighs 440 pounds.

Her massive size is due to a tumor which was on her pituitary gland but was removed to halt her growing.
Her growth started very early. At six years of age, she was already eating three times the normal amount of food compared to other children in her village. At eleven years old, she was already over six feet tall. By fifteen, she was six feet and nine inches in height.

In one of the photos, the "Love On Top" singer, 31, poses with her little girl, dressed, of course, in a blue outfit. Although Blue Ivy is facing away from the camera, she's still adorable as ever.

Beyonce, who will perform during the Super Bowl halftime show in February, also added a black and white snapshot showing Jay-Z, 42, carrying their precious cargo through a garden.

"From my family to yours," Beyonce wrote in a letter to her fans. "Wishing you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving."

2015: OF COURSE I CAN RUN

President Goodluck Jonathan’s political future seems to be getting clear. Despite opposition from certain quarters, Jonathan would not shy away from contesting in the 2015 election, as allowed in the Constitution.

According to him, with the political situation of Nigeria, it is better for him to spend nine years in office than to spend less than the eight years stipulated in the 1999 Constitution.
Jonathan spoke through his lawyer, Ade Okeya-Inneh (SAN), in a counter-affidavit filed to a suit by Henry Amadi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP), who is seeking to stop him from contesting in the election.

Malaria vaccine a letdown for infants

Had to share this guys...must read for parents.

That is a significant drop from a study last year done in slightly older children, which suggested the vaccine cut the malaria risk by about half — though that is still far below the protection provided from most vaccines. According to details released on Friday, the three-shot regimen reduced malaria cases by about 30 percent in infants aged 6 to 12 weeks, the target age for immunization.
Dr. Jennifer Cohn, a medical coordinator at Doctors Without Borders, described the vaccine's protection levels as "unacceptably low." She was not linked to the study.

SIGNS YOUR CHILD IS GIFTED

Many a proud parent has deemed their child bright, advanced and more intelligent than his or her peers. But how can parents tell the difference between their kid being smart or gifted?
According to child psychologist Stephanie Meyer, giftedness and intelligence are innate. "Parents will describe their child from the beginning, the very first moments of life, as just being super alert," she tells Away We Grow host Diane Mizota. "Parents will often come in describing their child as having an extraordinary memory advance mathematical ability, sense of humor--just extraordinary sense of humor in a two-year-old--advanced storytelling abilities. They will often describe their child as having advanced vocabulary skills and the ability to articulate their feelings and ideas in ways that seem far beyond their age-mates."

MONEY TINZ...

Avoid Opening Your Wallet On...

The society has become very cautious of her spending and her investments. these should help.
Saturday. Turns out, Americans spend 30 percent more on Saturday than the average weekday, according to a Gallup poll. The bump gets even bigger on weekends after a payday, which suggests this increase isn't just the result of more time to shop. Researchers behind the poll say this "paycheck effect" may be a reflection of consumers' overconfidence when they have more cash on hand.

Carry a Master List

You know the drill: Make a list before hitting the grocery store or department store aisles so you'll be less likely to buy impulsively and more likely to come home with things you actually need.
But, what about those visits that are more spontaneous? When a friend drags you to her favorite outlet or an afternoon stroll ends in a new neighborhood boutique, you'll find a master wish list might save you from yourself.
"I keep a shopping list on my smartphone," says Lauren Lyons Cole, a certified financial planner. A few times a year, she goes through cupboards and closets from attic to garage and notes what she needs. "I'm only allowed to buy the stuff that's on my list."
Although a small notepad and pen would do the job, a smartphone means access to apps such as Google Shopper, which not only can store your master list, but also can scan barcodes for price comparisons, reviews and more.
Think of a master list as the ever-present instructions for scavenger hunting items you most covet to be found at the very best price.
home with things you actually need.

Start a Joy-Based Ledger

"We have tried ad nauseam...for the past decade to get people to readjust spending by focusing on the raw numbers," says Manisha Thakor, founder and CEO of MoneyZen Wealth Management, a boutique financial-advisory firm serving women and families. She says simply looking at a budget in theory should fix the problem, but it hasn't.
Her solution: "Challenge yourself to be more mindful and conscious of what kind of return on joy you're getting from every dollar you spend."
This requires not only writing down how much money they cost you, but how much joy they brought you. Highlight only those items in your notebook (or smartphone), and then take a look at what's not highlighted. That's where you start thinking about making conscious, mindful adjustments to your spending, Thakor says. In other words, that's where you should start cutting back.

Follow the Rule of 5

Some people—the free-spirited or Type B, the list-phobes, the detail-averse—hate budgets. For them, Lauren Lyons Cole suggests the Rule of 5.
Start with your monthly income and subtract your bills, retirement funds, children's college-fund or other saving-plan contributions. Divide this amount by 5. Put one-fifth in a separate account for annual spending (holiday gifts, weekend getaways, etc.) The remaining four-fifths are your pocket money for the month—think of each portion as your weekly allowance.
"When it's gone, it's gone," Lyons Cole says.
By taking money off the table at the start, you're setting yourself up for success no matter what distractions or urges crop up along the way.

SURPRISING CHOLESTEROL MYTHS

Life insurance companies know a surprising secret about cholesterol that most doctors never tell patients: When it comes to rating your risk for a fatal heart attack, the least important cholesterol number is your level of LDL (bad) cholesterol. In fact, life insurance actuaries don’t even look at LDL levels, because large studies show it’s the worst predictor of heart attack risk.
Instead, life insurance companies use a simple math formula to rate your heart attack risk: They divide your total cholesterol by the level of HDL (good) cholesterol.
“If the ratio is below three, and there’s no inflammation in your arteries, you’re practically bulletproof against heart attacks and strokes, even if your LDL is high,” reports Amy Doneen, MSN, ARNP, medical director of the Heart Attack & Stroke Prevention Center in Spokane, Washington.
Here’s a look at eight common cholesterol myths.

Myth: Cholesterol is inherently evil.

Fact: You couldn’t survive without cholesterol, since this waxy substance produced by the liver plays many essential roles in our body, from waterproofing cell membranes to helping produce vitamin D, bile acids that help you digest fat, and sex hormones, including testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone.
Cholesterol is ferried through your body by molecular “submarines” called lipoproteins, such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Myth: Low cholesterol is always a sign of good health.

Fact: Although low levels of LDL cholesterol are usually healthy, a new study reports that people who develop cancer typically have lower LDL in the years prior to diagnosis than those who don’t get cancer.
Researchers compared 201 cancer patients to 402 control patients without cancer, matched by such factors as age, gender, smoking, blood pressure, diabetes, and body mass index. None of the patients had taken statins.
Thirteen earlier randomized clinical trials of statin therapy also found a link between low LDL and cancer, causing medical debate about whether statins raise risk. The new study suggests that an unknown biological mechanism—rather than cholesterol-lowering medication—may be the culprit.

Myth: High LDL means you could be headed for a heart attack.

Fact: Nearly 75 percent of people hospitalized for a heart attack have LDL (bad) cholesterol levels that fall within current recommended targets, and close to half have “optimal” levels, according to a national study of about 136,000 people. The researchers also reported that levels of protective HDL (good) cholesterol have dropped in heart attack patients over the last several years, probably due to the rise in obesity, diabetes, and insulin resistance. Only 2 percent of the patients studied had ideal levels of both LDL and HDL.

Myth: All LDL particles are equally dangerous.

Fact: The size of the particles matters, says Doneen. “Think of beach balls and bullets. Some LDL particles are small and dense, making it easier for them to penetrate the arterial lining and form plaque, while others are big and fluffy, so they tend to bounce off the artery walls.”
People who mostly have small, dense LDL cholesterol are up to three times more likely to have heart attacks than those with big, fluffy particles.
Find Foods that Lower Cholesterol but Keep Flavor

Myth: Americans have the world’s highest cholesterol levels.

Fact: Contrary to the stereotype that most of us are just a few big Macs away from a heart attack, US men rank 83rd in the world in average total cholesterol and US women 81st, according to the World Health Organization. For both sexes, the average is 197 mg/dL, slightly below the borderline high range (200 to 239 mg/dL).
In Columbia, men average a whopping 244 mg/dL—a level that doubles heart-disease risk—while Israeli, Libyan, Norwegian, and Uruguayan women are in a four-way tie for the highest average with 232.

Myth: Triglycerides trigger heart disease.

Fact: “Triglycerides, a type of blood fat, don’t invade the artery wall and form plaque,” explains Doneen. “However, high triglycerides mark another huge problem: insulin resistance, a pre-diabetic condition that is the root cause of 70 percent of heart attacks.”
High triglycerides are also one of the warning signs of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of abnormalities that multiply risk for coronary artery disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. To be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, you must have three or more of these disorders: high blood pressure, high blood sugar, a large waist, high triglycerides, and low HDL.

Myth: Eggs clogs up arteries.

Fact: It’s true that eggs are high in dietary cholesterol, with upwards of 200 mg, mainly in the yolk. Research shows, however, that eating three or more eggs a day boosts blood concentrations of both good and bad cholesterol.
The LDL particles tend to be the light, fluffy ones that are least likely to enter the arterial wall, while the increased HDL helps keep the arteries clean, suggesting that most people’s bodies handle cholesterol from eggs in a way that’s unlikely to harm the heart. The researchers say that their findings add to growing evidence that eggs are not “a dietary evil.”

Myth: There are no visible symptoms of high cholesterol.

Fact: Some people with high cholesterol develop yellowish-red bumps called xanthomas that can occur on the eyelids, joints, hands, or other parts of the body. People with diabetes or an inherited condition called familial hypercholesterolemia are more likely to have xanthomas.
The best way to tell if your cholesterol is too high is to have it checked every three years, starting at age 20, or more often, if advised by your healthcare provider.

Good info there guys.

TIPS FOR THAT COMPUTER EYE STRAIN.

It will amaze you the sporadic increase in eye problems now suffered. Is it surprising though?
no! its the computer age guys.
We are either on phones...large screens, no thanks to smart phones,(galaxy tab on me mind), ipads, ipods, when we are mobile, when in the office, we work on pc's and laptops, at home, our teles and smart gadgets are back to life...so its a cycle of eye damaging causes. So i loved this and thought to share with us too. By the way we cant live without them so we better learn  to live with them. Please do these lil tips, they help, very much.

Eyesight is our most valued sense, beating smell, touch taste and hearing in a recent poll. But despite this, 17 per cent of Brits admit they haven’t had an eye checkup in the past three years.

Have you had yours lately??

Staring at a computer screen all day can hurt your eyes

And on a daily basis, an increasing number of us flit from work computer screens, to mobiles, to TVs to tablets and back again, so it’s no surprise eye strain is on the up.

“If you have a real problem, such as unexplained blurred vision or pain, discharge or redness in the eyes, it’s really important you go and see your eye doctor,” says Steve Schallhorn, Chairman of Optical Express’ International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB), which carried out the survey.
If your eyes are just tired from staring at screens and you’re experiencing tired eyes from day to day tasks, here are Steve’s top five tips for beating eye strain:

1. Take five. Give yourself a few minutes, get comfortable, close your eyes, take off your glasses if you wear them, slow down, relax and take deep breaths. Just for a few minutes to really give your eyes a break.

2. When you get home, avoid near work for a period of time. You’ve been working on a screen all day so don’t jump right into checking your email, or looking at your phone or even read for about an hour, not even your TV.

3. Change your lighting. You want a gentle, soft light that’s not too bright or high intensity, but still illuminates properly. Try dimming a light, or turning on lamp rather than the main light. See how your eyes feel – you don’t want to put them under strain from too little or too much light.

Paracetamol linked to asthma in children

Mothers! this one is for us! found it and had to share, caution is the watch word.

Babies who are given paracetamol medicines such as Calpol are more likely to develop asthma by the time they go to pre-school, researchers have found.

The more often it is given in the first year of life, the more likely they are to develop the breathing problem, according to academics from the University of Copenhagen.Calpol is a paracetamol-based drug used to treat pain and fever in children

The study, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, adds to evidence of a potential link between giving paracetamol to young children and developing asthma.

However, the researchers say it does not prove cause and effect.

Professor Hans Bisgaard, senior researchers, said parents should only use paracetamol when necessary, such as when a child had a high temperature, but added: “We would like to stress that the use of this drug indeed is beneficial in the appropriate circumstances.”

He and his colleagues looked at 336 children, whose health was monitored from birth to the age of seven.

All the children had mothers with asthma, which meant they themselves were at a higher risk than normal of developing the condition.

By the age of three, 19 per cent had asthma-like symptoms, but those who had been given more paracetamol as a baby were more likely to display these signs.

Specifically, for each doubling of the number of days in which paracetamol was administered, there was a 28 per cent increase in asthma risk by three years of age.

But the researchers cautioned that the children who ended up developing asthma could have simply been sicker babies, meaning they needed to have paracetamol more frequently.

SHOCKING!!!

Found this for us guys, enjoy...

While ageing is an inevitable part of life, how quickly or well you age depends on many different factors. Although there are some obvious causes of premature ageing, there are many seemingly harmless things that can also add on the years.

1: Watching TV

While we all know that spending hours in front of the television is bad for your waistline, you may not know that it can also shorten your lifespan. Researchers from the University of Queensland found that for every hour you watch TV you may shorten your life by as much 22 minutes. Furthermore, research has suggested that watching TV could increase your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
Watching TV can shorten your lifespan and increase your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease

2: Drinking from bottles and through straws

You probably know that what you drink can affect your looks, but you may be surprised to hear that how you drink can also influence how well you age. In fact, sucking on straws and drinking out of sports bottles causes the same pursing action – and therefore the same fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth – as smoking. Try drinking directly from the glass whenever you can to help keep the wrinkles at bay.
